Conservation - A beginner's guide to saving the planet
Step 3: Your Garden

With so much wildlife habitat being lost in the countryside, even the smallest garden can become a real wildlife sanctuary.

A pond will provide a home for dragonflies and amphibians, while even the humble compost heap makes an ideal home for slow-worms.

The RSPB, Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Butterfly Conservation and Upgardener websites give plenty of useful advice on how to make your garden friendlier to birds, bumblebees and butterflies.

Then by making a note of the creatures you attract to your garden you can also contribute to national surveys of animals such as...
ladybirds...
butterflies...
bumblebees...
frogs, toads, newts, lizards and snakes...
